Sixteen centuries ago, a man named Alexander Corvinus was the only survivor of a plague that wiped out his village. Somehow, the man's body was able to mutate the virus, mold it to his own benefit and become the first true immortal. Later, he had three sons, one of whom did not inherit his father's immortality and was simply human. The other two were bitten, one by bat and one by wolf, creating the Vampire and Lycan lines. Corvinus' third son also carried the Corvinus Strain, hidden away in his genetic code — an exact duplicate of the original virus, passed along to his human descendants through the centuries.
Alexander fathers children at this time: Twins, Markus and William; one other son, and possibly other unmentioned children. Markus and William inherit the change in DNA that causes immortality. The other son is a normal human, but the virus is dormant in his genetic code. Markus is bitten by a bat, William is bitten by a wolf. (Possibly on some kind of outdoor brother-bonding event.) Some infection from the animal bites combines with the immortal abnormality already present in their DNA to make Markus the first Vampire and William the first lycan, but a vicious lycan as the first were, not like modern-day lycans.
For hundreds of years, Markus and William lived. Markus possibly made other vampires. William went on a bloody killing spree, unable to regain human form. Some people he attacked became lycans like him. Markus, feeling guilt for the destruction his brother caused, organized the vampires to try to control the lycans and clean up their mess. But he needs more help, so... Sometime between, say, 700 and 1200, Markus turned Viktor, a dying feudal lord who lived a selfish, materialistic life and was terrified of death, into a vampire. Viktor had a huge feudal army and Markus wanted to enlist them to help control William. After Viktor was turned, his army was turned vampiric and they tracked the lycans. This left three elders: Markus, the first; Viktor, by virtue of being turned by Markus, and Amelia, whose backstory we don't know. Viktor thought that killing Markus would destroy all vampires, so he was especially protective of Markus. That and his arrogant nature led to his hatred of the lycans.
In 1202 AD Viktor and Amelia finally managed to find William. Amelia captured the Lycan. Viktor would betray Markus, giving orders to keep William as far away from Markus as possible. Viktor locked William away in a fortress. However, with the Death Dealers loyal to Viktor, Markus could do nothing. Viktor kept two keys to William's dungeon; one under his chest, in his ribs, and the other around his daughter Sonja's neck, hiding it right under Markus's nose.
The relationship between the two Vampire Elders was always strained. Viktor, with Amelia's support, undercut Markus' power as ruler of the Vampire coven, ensuring Markus would never have the strength to free his brother. However, Viktor never staged an outright coup against Markus, as he had been told should Markus ever die, all in his bloodline would follow him to the grave - including Viktor. To prevent this from happening, the "Chain" was constructed, a system when only one Elder ruled while the other two slumbered. Viktor even domesticated the Vampires' former enemies, using the Lycans as watchdogs to guard them during the daylight hours. Eventually Viktor was at the centre of sparking a new war with the Lycans.
